Designer Edition KickStarter
Q1. Does Battlefields make Ogre play like a tabletop battlefield game but on a board?
Edit: Q1.5 I have read that Ogre Standard + Ogre Battlefields + Ogre Reinforcements still falls a little short as it does not have a lot of the GEV stuff that was present in the Designers Edition. Is that true? Is it impossible to presently get the full Ogre experience now Designers Edition is not available? Q2. Will there ever be (sometime soon) another KickStarter for the Designer Edition of Ogre (but maybe in a smaller box) with BattleFields as well? (I think that is what put me off the KickStarter, I just had nowhere to store that big box. Two or three smaller boxes, yes fine I could jimmy those in somewhere, but that massive box was bigger than my room. Now I am gutted I missed out on the KS because I have nothing at all.) Battlefields is not in the UK and from what I can see has never been listed in any UK shop. The Standard Edition has been in UK shops, but is not there now. The new copies on Ebay are rare and inflated in price. The ?Reinforcements? addon (or whatever it was called) is also not in UK shops. The Standard Edition looks nice, but does not have much more in than my very old edition from the 80s or 90s, except for the posher bits. I would feel like I only have half a game without Battlefields at least, and maybe some of the extra maps and Reinforcements. Last edited by JAA; 05-03-2024 at 03:29 PM. |

Re: Designer Edition KickStarter
To answer Q2 first, my impression is that SJG has no intention of repeating the DE Kickstarter.
For Q1, as a DE owner, I think I've used more of my set than most owners have (I ran a 9-faction game on four map boards) and there's still pieces I haven't punched out. It's massive overkill. Unless you're going to host a convention of Ogre players, you don't need to match the DE. Ogre Battlefields will get you a lot of great game play. Check out the supplements--Ogrezine, Ogre Book, Scenario Books--for more things you can do with the basics. There's a whole bunch of scenarios out there. 6th Ed gives you the classic Ogre vs Command Post scenario if you want to play the asymmetric game (strongly recommended). Reinforcements fills in some of the gaps. If you want to run more than two faction scenarios, the sponsored counter sheets from the Kickstarter are still for sale. I have them all, which is what let me do the 9-player game. You have my sympathy on the lack of availability in the UK. I just finished a Kickstarter, and the price I had to offer for UK shipping was so bad nobody took the option. |

One option to get the "full experience" would be to get some individual sheets that have been parted out. You may also be interested in the Classic Counter set PDF as a filler for missing units. It's certainly the cheapest way to get them. No. It became pretty clear that the ODE KS was a lesson in what not to do; it was a lot bigger than anyone expected and got out of control. That's not a path that's going to be taken a second time; a smaller box (if that's even possible) would not address the lessons learned from the KS.

Re: Designer Edition KickStarter
The ODE Kickstarter may have been a lesson in what not to do from a producer's perspective, but I sure am glad they did it. I was able to acquire 2 copies of ODE and at least one copy of the sponsored counter sheets, and they are prized possessions. The artwork was excellent, the presentation over the top and just a huge pile of fun. Do I really "need" grey laser towers? Probably not, but is is fun to have them. For the Ogre players considering acquiring a copy of ODE, I recommend doing so, if feasible. Like a big wild party, it is something that cannot and probably should not be replicated. But boy was it fun.

Re: Designer Edition KickStarter
I have _ODE_ -- I need a wheeled cart to haul *ALL 70 LBS. OF IT* around. .:)
Were it me running the zoo^H^H^HKS: The "main box" _ODE_ would be about like the "Many Minis" box -- a rules manual; enough vehicles for a 2-player game setup; some buildings of various types. Add-Ons would be something like blister packs of, say, a platoon of HVYs, or a platoon of GEVs, or a section of HWZs, or a Gun Tower -- "you get the general idea". .:) As folks have said: Keep it smaller, and thus more manageable. (And *LIGHTER* -- Paper gets heavy *real* quick. .:) )
