I would disagree. Most of the stuff needed to know how the core magi system is different is in the basic set true. But Magic does have alternative magic systems changes too.

What exactly is in Magic that's not otherwise in either 3e book, Characters or in Thaumatology? Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything.

For starters Thaumatology isn't on the shopping list so you can't count that.

If somebody just wants the rules for runes or something, they are much better off getting it rather than Magic. All Magic has is a reprint of the 3e rules, anyway.

THE only reason people are saying not to buy magic is budget reasoning So it is NOT better off buying 2 other books instead on just 1 book.

Thaumatology is only worth buying is if the basis system describe in magic are interesting to you.

Yes, but what exactly is in the 4e Magic that's not in the 3e books and Campaigns?

Well... the main reason. There is the chance that the OP might not derive sufficient utility from the material added by Grimoire, which is why I suggested previewing it if possible.

<knows he is going to end up having to get his copy out of storage :/ >

Over the last couple of decades I've used the expanded random demon table, a maybe a couple of spells, otherwise not so much.

Nowadays I'm unlikely to use that system at all, honestly (unless I'm running DF or similar) I'm even regretting having used the Alchemy rules in Desolation Road. I'd have been better off using the alchemy as technology approach in Fantasy Tech 1 combined some of the Material Magic rules in Thaumatology.
