Re: Penalty for for having to shoot down a tube?

Humm, dawned on me that the distance from edge of the bullet, if centered in the target area, to the edge of the bullet, if exactly on the edge of the target area, is always half the width of the target area. I don't know how I was counting it before, but it cut the "safe distance" of how close you can place a bullet to something you don't want to hit roughly in half. Going back to the "down the tube shot:" He's got DX based skills high enough to make a skill roll at -7 to line it up, essentially the 2" size modifier for the area needed for the weapon to be in with +2 for a round target, and OK odds at -9 if the +2 for a round target doesn't apply. Would a DX/skill roll to "line it up" work that way? Also, without the +3 for speed and range being known precisely (I was wrong about that), that drops the non-combat modifiers to just +5. If the "lining it up" penalty is -5 or less to the shot on top of size/range, he's good, but if it's any higher, the odds go south quickly. -5 penalty, more, less, nothing but included in the DX based roll? |

Yes, it's a normal target size modifier.

Re: Penalty for for having to shoot down a tube?
If one were to get really pernickity the bullet is falling inside the tube earthward at 9.8 m per second per second. So velocity also plays a part in the effective target size, although admittedly probably below gurps resolution.
In my opinion as a shooter, firing at a known range is not about changing your sights, but being able to calculate hold over/under. One almost never has the cross hairs where one intends to shoot.

. There are different styles, I'm a hunter, not military. The point I'm trying to make is i wouldn't disallow the +3 for a known range because someone had fixed sights.

Hypothetically, if you're using a low tech weapon that doesn't have a sight (a bow, for example), do either of you think the bonus would still apply? |

Re: Penalty for for having to shoot down a tube?
There are adjustable bow sights. Without an adjustable sight I don't see how precise range can help at all, and Tactical Shooting p. 27 seems clear to me. Aiming by "Kentucky windage" and good zero alone is just regular sighted shots, IMO.

Re: Penalty for for having to shoot down a tube?
I'd consider reducing the +3 to +2, though it's reasonable to think that they have no effect at the granularity of GURPS. The actual effect should be a slight increase in speed, because 'is the target in the exact position in my sights theory says he should be' is easier if that position happens to be the center.
Yes, it should apply; while lack of a sight hurts, rangefinding is way more important with low tech weapons than high tech weapons. |
