when does played cards go to the discard pile?

A situation came up where a cleric plays deck of too many things and discards their whole hand.

when you play cards do they go to discard right away?

can the active player (cleric) rearrange the discards before putting them in the discard pile to have too many things on top to use the cleric resurrection ability to get deck of too many things back to their hand?

I am not familiar with the Deck of Too Many Things, but generally, when you are told to "discard" one or more cards, they are discarded immediately. If you discard more then one card, you can choose how they are arranged. If you are "playing" cards, then they are usually discarded after the combat, and the player whose turn it is arranges the cards when they are discarded.

discard as many cards as you want and then draw that many cards from either deck

edit: the play is not during combat. it is played before the door is kicked

You would "use" the DoTMT. Discard the cards. Draw the cards. Discard the DoTMT.

The clerics ability is only eligible to be used when drawing cards face up. When you play DOTMT you draw new cards to replace your hand. It mentions nothing about drawing them face up. So the Cleric ability would not work regardless.

The Cleric in question is using DOTMT before they kick the door in. Since the DOTMT is on the top of the Door discard pile after using, it is eligible to be drawn by the cleric when they kick the door in, since that is a face-up draw.
