Default Dag's Discount Henchmen: Halfling Warrior

"Dag, I see you have brought us ... a one-armed halfling in full mail and a greathelm today. Where do you find these guys?"

"You know, I get around."

"Is he? ... she? Any good?"

"She. And oh yeah, don't let the size fool you, she's pretty deadly, and a bargain to boot!"

"I'm not worried about the size. Known too many halflings to worry about the size. The armor is promising too. I'm just worried about ... well ... one arm and a butcher knife. I guess we'll have to spar a bit."

"Hey Bumi, come and show Yvor what you got. He's interested in hiring you."

...

"Not bad at all ... Booty is it?"

"Bumi."

"Ok, Bumi, you're pretty deadly with that knife of yours. Ok Dag, I'm interested in this one. How much?"

Bumi Cherrybottom
~125-point Halfling Mercenary

Bumi never discusses her past, and that is because she has only hazy, blood-soaked memories of any time before she woke up on a freshly exorcised dark alter deep in a dungeon surrounded by dead delvers, bone fragments, and gore. Escaping to the surface world she ran terrified through the wilds for days until she was given succor by a nearsighted halfling granny who cleaned her up, tended her wounds, and helped her regain basic mental and social stability. Bumi tries not to think about what must have happened to her in that dungeon and has largely succeeded. She has simple needs and she henches to fufill them, and the fact that being a delver is clearly a way to learn more about dungeons and possibly figure out her own history has just not occurred to her. Her mental state is pretty fragile despite her phelgmatic outward demeanor.

She is never without her full mail and greathelm. The diminutive mercenary literally sleeps in this kit, and few who know her have ever glimpsed her face. Those close confidants that have understand – she is a remarkably ugly woman, with an unsymmetrical lumpy skull, patchy hair, and a gaunt musculastructure that gives her a disturbingly feral aspect. Living in her armor also makes her redolent, and she tends to stumble and smash into things more than one might hope. She probably gets away with this because she is willing to disarm in civilization, and is well, one armed and short. A fair number of the folks in town think she must be the simple child of some rich noble or merchant.

Bumi is taciturn and tight lipped, only answering direct questions, usually with one syllable. But she does her job well, and has been on several delves since she joined the henchman community. She is not liked, and has few friends, but is well respected. The greater halfling community has also started to notice her as she donates a significant amount of coin to halfling charities and defends any halfling she sees being bullied. If she is still in contact with the lady who rescued her she does not talk about it.

Bumi's merchant skills are non-existent. You can probably hire her at a good discount, as long as you are careful not to make her too angry.

Notes:
The alert reader may have noticed that Bumi lacks many basic halfling characteristics, and in fact so has the halfling community. They are not sure what she is, but support her since she supports them and "seems nice". However, SHE is not sure what she is either, and only the fact that she is so private and quiet about everything has prevented others from noticing.

The astute reader may be thinking "That's probably a good thing, because she's clearly some sort of variant Doomchild and the fact that she is running around town unsupervised would make the authorities freak out." Well thought gentle reader, well thought; the authorities WOULD freak out, and there would probably be violence, explosions, and terrible embarrassment.

It would probably be even worse if the wizard's guild got a hold of her – they'd be really really curious about what happened to create a free-willed morally uncompromised doomchild. Like willing to exploit the fact that vivisection of demons is perfectly legal curious. They'd be very careful of course ... all wizards worth their scrolls know vivisecting a Doomchild is ... tricky.

This is probably not going to matter, however. As a ~125 pt berserk henchman with HT 11 on serious delves, her expected future lifespan is actually pretty low. If she is wearing her mail when she dies (and she almost certainly will be) her 3d Doomchild death blast will do 2d-1 shrapnel damage instead of the usual 1d.

Players appreciate that sort of attention to detail.

Idiots. If anyone manages to get her story, the first thing to do is to trace Granny Cherrybottom, which gets you the approximate area where someone was making doomchildren. Why try to reverse-engineer a armed bomb when you have a chance of getting the blueprints?

It means fragrant in this context, perhaps with a tinge of irony.

You already get the student magicians who fail the financial part of their exams, and all the zombies you can bring home. You want more?

Is that a rhetorical question?

I love this one. Great concept and story. I’ll need to have this one show up at the hiring spot :)

“Boomy” hehe
