That's a good way to do it. Make a little competition. That also gives a lot of potential for Intel sharing... Just how close together do the Americans work with the Australians? what about with the French or Pakistanis?

Of course, the shaft only helps if useful things are on the surface. Which by default they probably are: its a great place to recruit local wizards in most settings. We don't have to make the surface useful. It might be interesting to keep it as a fine place to travel around, but not contain any real resources.



Creating safe zones around the portals is certainly at the top of the list, and terrain disadvantages could negated in areas controlled for a while, certainly.

Magic, of course, changes the equation.

In most situations, a riding lawnmower pulling a machine gun in a trailer will go a long ways, so long as you've got good visibility and can move over the terrain.



This sub-discussion is about changing that equation, of course.
