11) The Infinite Telegram

Trinity didn't bring magic, it brought Earth into contact with other Earths. It's Infinite Worlds in the era of Cold War paranoia! How far are you willing to go to prevent the Commies from taking over the timeline where the Red Revolution failed, and can you trust these "Centrum" people not to stab you in the back?

12) Infinite Merlins

As above, only with magic, monsters, and abductions by individuals identifying themselves only as "the Cabal".

For a ‘90’s take: Perhaps it’s the hole in the ozone layer at the south pole.

That's not bad.

Though the original take on the portals was that they didn't appear or disappear and couldn't be created or closed. Because dealing with PC manipulations to portals was a headache I didn't want.

Over Antarctica would allow a more multinational approach. Putting the portal anywhere else would give a major tilt toward some specific group or nation.

For Mirrorskies there could be dozens or even hundreds of portals that are simply in the high atmosphere.

That would certainly keep them out of reach of civilizations below a certain TL, which is a neat idea. Though the ease of running ground transport through ones at dirt-level is probably better for interconnecting worlds.

Or push for development of mega-planes making for even more divergence in culture and tech.

Could explain strange signs of cross timeline debris/interference from decades ago. Survivors of lost flights.

Add intermittent radio signals through the portals to explain mysteries like Flight 19.

Perhaps they are always there, but ozone naturally masks them somehow. The Antarctic portal would be the first observed, but others might have been found via concerted searching (and hopefully not extended CFL use)
