Way back in the before times of 3e, I ran a game with the newly minted Umana system. In one fight, the mage was close to tapped out levitate to "safety" from a melee only semi-boss. He underestimated the baddie's strength who jumped up and grappled the mage's foot. It was do or die time so the wizard cast some intangibility spell or other and triggered a bad calamity - every fail was a crit or something like that and he had no idea how long it would last. He abstained from casting for a month.
