OOC: Pretty much. Of course, the key to the prisoner's dilemma is the lack of effective communication, and the fact that it's a one-shot deal. Given time and experience, it is possible to improve ... but the pd offers a framework to survive that long.

IC: "Before I can create an effective story, I need to know what you inserted or deleted magically, and to whom," Chandra says. "Otherwise, I could contradict you without realizing it."

Haley: "I didn't tamper with their minds, beyond directing them to do temporary things. Memory Altering is something I'd like to avoid."

OOC: I've got the beginnings of an idea, but the details depend on what sort of classes Haley is taking ... and maybe whether there's anyone she regularly hangs around with. Has her surveillance of Haley turned up either piece of information?

She has many aquaintances and no real friends -- certainly not her roommate. She's training for work in modern like worlds with a touch of dealing with the unexpected -- It looks like she's training for centrum, but it also means she'd be on the front lines if they discovered her home world.

All at once, Chandra has an idea.

This is going to be extremely embarrassing, she thinks. But that should help. Gopal and I both guard our dignity so closely, the boys would never think I would fake something like this. And they'll certainly understand why I don't want to go into detail!

"All right," she says. "To start with, the 'energy' I felt was all from that device. Not magic, though. An inner magnet or something of the sort that I'm extremely sensitive to ... it happens sometimes, though it's a very small minority of people."

"Which would have been nice to know before I confronted you. It would have avoided so much awkwardness."

She puts on an embarrassed blush and posture. "I thought ... well, since she's always on her own ... she stays shut up in her room so much ... and she was so hostile to anyone trying to find out what she had ..."

Embarrassment passes to humiliation. "Well, how was I to know the damned thing was a sex toy!"

Haley: "Its a start, I suppose. How to you describe the battery you found as being part of it, how do you describe your double as not having felt it, and what do we do to discourage the boys from digging further -- just because they believe you doesn't mean they'll leave me alone."

It's starting to feel like they're getting somewhere.

"Gopal is easy," Chandra says. "She and I were raised in different environments, with different exposure to electromagnetic fields. The mix of heredity and environment obviously gave me a trait she lacks. As she likes to remind me, we're not the same person."

"The battery was obviously nothing of the sort. Painfully so. It's ... ah ... something I'd really rather not dwell on."

"I suspect I'll have Gopal's help in insisting the boys leave you alone. If they give you any grief, you'll know who told, and that puts attention on me and Gopal, which neither of us wants." She smiles a little. "As shy as she is, she won't want to be within a mile of that kind of public embarrassment, even without a double involved."

Haley: "Ok, you and Gopal obviously have at least some things different to start with. That should be good. I'm not sure that vaugeness will aid the boys in staying away. They won't bring it up with you two, but they strike me as the curious type. Begging not to investigate may just egg them on. I may need to confront them directly. Anything else you can think of to keep them away? "

OOC: Since Chandra has Serendipity, is there anything else that can conveniently take the boys' attention away from Hailey -- something else suspicious to follow, a suspension for an egregious prank, a lead on how to get Morgan off world, or even a duty that takes them off-world for a while? Some of those, Chandra might know about.

(Heck, if we're talking true serendipity, her phone on the table might suddenly get a text to that effect from one of the boys or from Gopal.)

OCC: Serindipidy. hmmm. A good distraction for the boys...
exploring more of what chandra's sense can do -- there is actually one other thing on base that sets it off -- the conveyors.
You can take the suspension option if you wish.
Suspicious behavior -- Haley can have found something suspicious while peruse the minds of the folks here.
