"It, ah.... For a long time we thought it would be worthwhile but when we finally got it we realized it's something that takes immense effort for very little result. Like we've done it, as a proof-of-concept thing, but it took thousands of people many years to perform the series of rituals that led to extremely small amounts of lead being converted into similarly small amounts of gold. I wasn't part of the project, but if I remember correctly it was an amount too small... too small to hold without special tools. Possibly too small to see without special tools. And that much effort from that many people could mine far more gold than it can convert it from lead."

"Ah, that makes sense. A pity."

The elf continues to explain the meaning of the document. Graham is amazed how much can be fit on the single page, and is beginning to get some inkling of the language.

Graham listens intently for as long as the elf is willing to explain.

After quite some time, People start moving food into the dining hall, followed by people moving in. The food is mostly meat and fruit. the elf suggests that graham sit down at one of the tables, and when the hostess comes in and sits, everyone begins to eat.

Graham would not have thought elves would be such messy eaters. The only utensils are fingers, and the only dishes cups. Elbows are up on the table, and the conversation is loud. bones are tossed every which way, and the rich wine is certainly responsible for the table's current color.

Lots of bad puns about Graham's appearance are made, and the rumor goes around that he is from "the clouds" and that creatures from the clouds are all rounded. The tingling sensation is IMMENSE, coming from all over the table. Some of it is directed at you, mostly from far away, but most is not.

Graham sits, as suggested, but as close to a wall as possible, uncomfortable.

He eats, but is largely distracted by the spectacle. After a small taste of the wine, he decides to forego drinking and focuses on fruit for the moisture.

The meal eventually winds down with different groups breaking off and talking in corners. The gossip is intense, and there are many different possible meanings for each conversation. Graham gets the impression they don't want to be understood and are intentionally being vauge. The Hostess seems to be the center of attention, but the elf who explained the magic also has lots of people around him. The buzzing feeling continues sporadically.

Graham listens idly to the conversations but goes back to the papers and reviews what the elf told him, trying to take the concepts and figure out new ways to put them together.

Graham fiddles for most of the night, and the crowd slowly fades away, and the singing begins again, this a little more jovial than the last, probably loosed by the wine.

The characters are beginning to make sense to him. They seem to point to something, but he's not sure what. Of course, that may be the point.

He sits in a corner, ostensibly studying but really paying less and less attention to the papers. The whole environment is just dreamy, so it's really no surprise when he just drifts off where he is.
