[IC] Lost in Dreams [Graham]

((Lets do a mix: (question: what ARE violin strings made of?) ))

Narcosian (the instrument maker) provided Graham with a wooden tablet and a charcoal pencil of sorts, and Graham does his best to sketch out what a violin is.

Narcosian tries to understand the materials involved. There is a slight hiccup about what a horse is. Narcosian keeps on asking what it's horns look like, and declaring he doesn't know of any herbivores that size without horns or tusks of some type.

((Ideally metal, but optionally nylon and historically intestine. Actually the lute strings might well work without any adjustment at all. It'd be worth a try, at least, and worst-case scenario I'd just need lute strings of an abnormal length or diameter.))

"It's really not vital that it be from a horse. Do you have any animals with long, abrasive hairs? I assume on their tails. Like..." He holds his hands out, about two and a half feet apart.

"hmmm... Unicorn hair might work...Its a strange material for an instrument though. How does it make its sound?"

[momothefiddler]

"Unicorns? Wow. The hair is stretched on a bow, which is shaped something like this-" He sketches it poorly "-and thus rubbed against the strings. Because the hair is abrasive, that makes the strings vibrate much like plucking them does, but with a vastly different tone."

[ericthered]

"And you can make music with that? strange... I wouldn't have thought it possible. hmm. I think I understand the instrument. It will be difficult to make, but I think I can do it. Its very... worked. It will be difficult to get the magic flowing into it. I'll see what I can do."

[momothefiddler]

"Thank you very much for putting the effort into this. It means a lot to me."

"Oh, if this works, It will be worth it. Its not every decade you invent a new instrument, particularly one like this."

[momothefiddler]

Graham chuckles. "Very true. How long will the process take? Will you have more questions? Do you mind if I stay and watch anyway?"

[ericthered]

"It will take a few days. not using the proper materials won't give us the sound you want, so the first instrument won't be very good, and we need the magic to soak into it. I don't mind if you watch, but it will take a while"

[momothefiddler]

"Thanks. I have a couple of books I've been working on; I'll go get those and then come back to watch. The instrument makers in my world always fascinated me and adding your magic to the process only makes it more interesting."
