What methods have your players adopted to add a spell to their existing inventory?
Pressure a player to make a PC with the spell?
Hireling wizard?
Magic items?
Books?
Scrolls?

I prefer to keep spell acquisition--as in learning a spell--tied to the need to having access to tomes, sometimes more than one book per spell. I also allow the players to occasionally find scrolls, which give a one-time chance at casting a spell outside their repertoire. On the latest adventure in my Tuesday night game, the PCs hired an NPC wizard, but he died in the very first encounter, falling off a rotten bridge into a kraken-infested river.

Saves on payroll when you only pay them for half the trip.
