Default Auto-Galley

Beyond what is stated under "Life Support" rules can anyone explain more in depth about "Auto-Galleys" and how food preparation/storage/etc. is used in the game?

On the Traveller RPG Facebook page I asked about "Auto-Galleys" and got numerous answers.

There are so many different versions of Traveller, it is usually necessary to specify what rules you're asking about. Which version are you using?

Hmmm.

GURPS Traveller doesn't have an "auto-galley" as such. GT follows classic Traveller in allocating half the nominal volume of staterooms to "common areas," presumably including food preparation. There's a discussion in GT: Starships (pp. 58, 60) about what goes into a galley -- specialized facilities for ships with more than ~20 staterooms -- but that's just a food preparation area for someone to exercise their Cooking skills.

Note that GT assumes "total life support," which produces food as well as air and water. Therefore, "food preparation" includes handling things like algae, mycoprotein, and vat-grown meat. GT: Far Trader (p. 69) talks about food additives to make this more palatable.

GURPS Ultratech (p. 69) does have an Autokitchen, which is essentially a robot with Cooking skill that is built into a galley. This would be compatible with GT without modification, and probably the best way to handle the matter.

Correct GT doesn't talk about Auto-Galleys, it talks about stores in relation to total life support. GS has same wording as GT. My confusion with so many "Space" RPG rules.

GT is based on VE2, which has a Small Galley on page 77. VeX1 has a Galley on page 23.
