Default Alien Disadvantages

Please help me with this question. We're in the middle of prepping for a sci-fi game with alien races. Most of which we're having to make ourselves.

The question is; do the disadvantages of the race count against the total for the character? I've looked for the answer in the books we have but can't find anything.

If you mean "Do they count against the disadvantage total", no. See p452, under Racial Advantages and Disadvantages.

Unless the GM says they do at which point they do count, Rule Zero.

At which point, making such a template part of the campaign standard is just screwing players out of customization. This is especially true when the template actually has more disadvantages than the campaign standard limit.

If you're making a template then making a character with a disadvantage limit who uses that template there is an awful lot of temptation to load extra disadvantages into the template, because they are cool/beardy/appropriate/what you want to play or what ever, that can make the disadvantage limit insignificant/unimportant.

That's why the GM has to approve of the alien race templates before anyone can use them.

When I am the GM, I reserve the right to screen all racial templates.

No, mostly what alien templates do in that case is permit characters with advantages that wouldn't be available (at least, without UB) to ordinary humans.

I would imagine in all but the most species crowded campaigns, the GM would have already made all the available playable ones. At least in general idea if not fully character statted.
