This is a setting I have used for one campaign and several freestanding adventures with another campaign on my upcoming prospectus. I have been using it as a basis for learning and using the Spaceships rules so I thought I would share with the forum for use and comment.
This is a TL10 setting with limited superscience. The only ^ systems available are Stardrives and Fusion Torch reaction engines and the Artificial Gravity option. Stardrives use the hot reactionless thruster and drive field switches and are gravity and vacuum limited. They can be used to enter and leave close orbit but are erratic when used in a strong gravity well and the drive field reacts unpredictably with atmosphere. Each Stardrive provides 1G of acceleration with a +8 IR signature. SM+8(1,000 tons) is the minimum mass needed for a stardrive to function with FTL performance declining by 1-2% at SM+10 and again at SM+12. Each Stardrive generates a light kinetic Forcefield (reduce DR by one step from TL11 value), multiple fields do stack. I may occasionally use split systems (either 1/2 systems or 3 systems one SM smaller). Also SM+10 and larger ships may use habitat spaces for small hanger bays. 6 cabins for a 30 ton hanger or 20 cabins for a 100 ton hanger. The 30 ton pinnace carried by some of these ships is identical to Agemegos' Type 64 shuttle. Note that the Pathfinder-class is from the same setting. It would list as INS Pathfinder FFE-42-15. These ships are using reactionless drives - they don't need fuel tanks.

About the Frigate:
Why bothering with all the Armor? A Stardrive costs as much as the armor and provides more than double the protection and adds speed. Maybe the Stardrives should be a bit more expensive to compensate for that! |

...i find that a little irritating that armor is the same price as a drive system. Unless the stardrive is a "easy hoax" type of thing (you COULD build it with TL3, if you ever gt access to an empty coke bottle and are named McGyver, just noone came around the idea) it should be a little more expensive than just a block of whatever material you use for the armor in detail. All the work, research etc. has to be worth SOMETHING. |
