Hi all,
I'm interested in your opinion as to well known worlds (from books, movies, games, etc) that could be used as basis for a Dungeon Fantasy campaign - while keeping original flavour of those worlds but not changing basic Dungeon Fantasy assumptions. Any recommendations? Last edited by Szumo; 05-20-2010 at 08:28 AM. Reason: Spelling |

The assumptions of RPG fantasy that DF employs ARE NOT particularly compatible with pre-D&D Fantasy tales of any sort. Gygax fused the most Uber elements of Vance, Lieber, Howard, Moorcock and despite his protestations in a column written for Dragon magazine, Tolkein. DF builds from there to recreate the millieu commonly seen in 1970s RPGs.

I dont know of any that fit perfectly, but I think most fantasy movies fit fairly well.
Movies The Sword and The Sorcerer (For which I hear a sequel is pending) Dragon Slayer Krull Conan the Destroyer (The first ones general lack of magic makes it a less ideal choice) And the RPG Games fo the 80's are probably a good fit also as they could be described as 'Games written so people would stop loosing dice and charachter sheets and a computer to do the bookkeeping' Video Games Pool of Radiance The Bards Tale (Would LOVE to hear magic ideas on this one) Nymdok |

There was an old TV show called Wizards and Warriors, back in the early 1980s that played as a spoof of the conceits of D&D, but it actually had a few interesting concepts that could be be adapted amid the snarks and laughs.

Goodman Games world of Áereth is pretty good. They are available on e23.
As for games there are quite a few of them Dungeon Siege had a good Dungeon Fantasy style plot. Probably old enough now where most people had never heard, or had forgotten about it. Diablo is always a classic. It gave a nice rebirth to the mega dungeon which was not as popular in the 1990's and early 2000's Baulder's Gate series (both books and video games) Dragon's Age is pretty good, although I've only played it a bit I've been told that the game Fate is good as well. Torchlight is not bad either.

I'm a big fan of Monte Cook's Ptolus. It's written for D&D 3rd Edition, but the setting book has so much detail and background history that it should be fairly easy to convert.
I've always wanted to see a game based on the movie Legend. I'm not sure if it would count as Dungeon Fantasy, but I like the feel (seems like a twisted fairie tale of sorts to me) of the movie, and there's a good deal of dungeon delving in the movie. While this might come across as an odd suggestion, I've often felt that the world of Narnia would make a good Dungeon Fantasy setting. |

Virtually any world can be used, depending on the focus of hte adventures, but those that really lend themselves to it seem to have been mentioned; at least the ones that sprang to my mind.
That said, you can run a "Dungeon Fantasy" (albeit with heavily modified templates) in just about any setting. As Mailanka's blog mentions, Gothic Space Opera is basically Dungeon Fantasy in SPAAAAACE! Likewise, most FPS (I'm looking at Doom, Half-Life, etc) are straight up DF material with a modern/future spin. Still to stay true to the original post, I'll try to contribute something here....um: Warcraft (strategy game world for a darker version) or World of Warcraft (for the friendly, orcs-are-nice version), and really the granddaddy of them all (discounting Tolkein, who would probably be the godfather): Warhammer Fantasy.
