I pretty much do the same. Sometimes the players want a more specific description than what I'm giving verbally and I'll make a quick sketch or just grab the nearest little thing (usually dice) and orient them to give a picture. We often abandon the sketch/"miniatures" as soon as people get the picture. I still use most of the rules.

We do some of the descriptions in 3-space. I might say, "he's about as far away as that tree" or "the guy you just shot is laying on the ground like this with his hand up like this" (illustrating with my body). We don't do any larping, but sometimes putting the ideas into the space around us gives a sense of clarity and realism.
