I play the more description method, when exact position begins to matter to the group, that when I brake out my other then d6 dice in my collection, and THEY become my miniatures , different sizes and differ number mean differ thing depending on the situation
I pretty much do the same. Sometimes the players want a more specific description than what I'm giving verbally and I'll make a quick sketch or just grab the nearest little thing (usually dice) and orient them to give a picture. We often abandon the sketch/"miniatures" as soon as people get the picture. I still use most of the rules.

We do some of the descriptions in 3-space. I might say, "he's about as far away as that tree" or "the guy you just shot is laying on the ground like this with his hand up like this" (illustrating with my body). We don't do any larping, but sometimes putting the ideas into the space around us gives a sense of clarity and realism.

If you playing on a scale, but unhexed map, just use a scaled ruler like the war gamers, if the rule has them under a scaled yard from each other they are in close combat.

Got it. Thats a good idea instead of trying to find miniatures to fit the characters. So from what I read there is facing involved. Does it cost movement to change facing or do you just decide where you are facing when your movement turn is over?

The rule is, if you only used half or less of your movement, you can face any direction at the end of your movement. Otherwise turning costs one yard of movement per hex side.

This is the method I'd like to use. That way you dont have to map out the area and worry about markers/miniatures. So for those of you who use this method, do you just estimate distances/facing or have a detailed way of keeping notes?
