I agree wholeheartedly. And I know that you and I aren't the only ones who feel that way. :)

But that's exactly what's so wonderful about DF's modular format. It means that fschiff can skip DF10 while you and I pick it up and use it. One gamer might think that nonhuman races were a huge mistake and skip DF3, while another buys it and makes races a big part of the setting. Even moreso than normal GURPS, it's all a la carte.

I'll also point out that, while early DF books did downplay the town as much as possible, they also made it clear that towns are important and potential places for adventure. Look at characters like the bard, whose social skills really come into play when in civilization. And he's been in the setting since DF1.

So, you don't need explicit towns, villages and taverns to play DF. But then again, you don't need elves and halflings, either. Or gods. Or summoned animals. But me, I play with all of that crazy stuff. :)
