I'm familiar with that idea, and I have nothing against it as such. But I don't think the idea has intrinsically more merit than the idea that the guy who keeps the others alive because he can kill the enemies or patch up the wounded should get a bigger base share. It Mr. Richard R. Rich can sell the other players on the idea then bully for him. If Mr. Strongarm can sell the other players on
his idea then bully for
him. And if the party agrees to share and share alike, then that's fine by me too.

Barring that Mr. Rich's extra cash comes from the fact that he can unload his loot at a premium other characters can't match. If he is willing to share his contacts with his companions, well, that's his choice. Just like Mr. Cleric could decide if he should bother patching Mr. Rich back up.
