If he's "the only healer, a superb fighter," or "the only 'locksmith' in the party", well, that's why he was allowed into the party in the first place isn't it? If he didn't have any of those skills and was dead broke (or a reasonable level of poor), who'd want them along? They'd be dead weight. Besides, this is DF we're talking about here, and in DF there are precisely two reasons for saving the world: 1) You can make a buck doing it, and 2) the world is where you keep your stuff. With that being said, you want to believe that I'd be looking to make a buck off the guy I have to keep bankrolling.

Now to further the idea of Wealth being the character's stake in the party (or shares in the company if you will). Who says he can't buy in further? If the poor character saves up some of his take and buys up his wealth, then on the next delve he can pay more in to the investment and receive a greater dividend. Actually, in DF calling the adventuring group a Company (regardless of the implication of size this pulls from the military crowd) might be better than calling them a party.
