This creature is a really good example of how to use mythology in FRPG game design, IMNHO. I think you did a great job here, if I hadn't made that explicitly clear before. :)
Many of the D&D versions of mythological creatures are basically original creations loosely inspired by the descriptions, really. The D&D minotaur is the classic example I can think of off the top of my head, but there are others.
