Most robots aren't like that, they have initiative, at least within their jobs. Many won't so this works for those... I guess putting an accessability limitation on this so that their job isn't included in the "no initiative" situation?

I'd certainly allow doing even a complex job to not be a part of the "slave mentality" assuming the intricacies of job is well known to the character. Now once the job is finished (either for the moment or the work shift is over) then I'd let it kick in again.
