High intelligence or simply big database of orders, translatable by situation, eg, assume Jeeves had Slave Mentality: he obeyed his master's orders, albeit with an attempt at applying common sense "If you're certain this is a good idea, sir." He didn't wait in the corner to prepare breakfast, clothes, etc He had duties, preprogrammed and customised routines.

Remember that Robocop movie where he had a huge database of instructions... Well, those robots with initiative could be following orders from long-dead humans.
