Happily, one could, if one were prepared to come up with a character that has a reason to know one or more of the following:
a) Richard Ambrose Lawson, attorney at law. Educated at Harvard and Columbia, comes from a prominent Virginian family whose money was initially made in tobacco. His father is respected attorney and Washington lobbyist, his younger brother an up-and-coming star in Boston art circles and he has a sister attending Harvard. Became an ADA after passing the bar and made contacts among policemen and prosecutors. First case after switching to the other side was a wrongful imprisonment suit based on improper actions of several policemen. Won a one million dollar settlement after developing a source inside the police department. A very high flyer, recently hired by a prominent Boston law firm after several firms bid for him. Handsome, witty and much sought after by women. In his high school and college years, he was a brilliant athlete who could have gone professional in more than one sport. His best sports were Saber Fencing and Track and Field, particularly the 400 yard dash. b) As yet unnamed, PI, Mst Sgt (Ret.). A former military policeman who entered the Boston PD after his military service. Quickly made detective on the basis of his skills and experience learned in the service. His innate decency led him to supply information about fellow policemen to Lawson. His superiors could not fire him for it, but made it impossible for him to work in the department. Left under a cloud. Has been trying to make ends meet as a private detective, but is too decent to trawl garbage and spy on wives and looks too bad in suit to be successful with the lawyers that mostly employ detectives. Married to his childhood sweetheard, has one daughter aged 14. Catholic and attends church regularly. His father is a dockworker at Conley Terminal in South Boston. c) Professor David Reynard. A relatively young man to be a full professor at Harvard University, Reynard holds a dual citizenship, US and Israeli. He is educated in Israel, where he served his mandatory military service (and where he uses the name David ben Yitzchak). He is a Professor of Religious Anthropology and his field of expertise is Zoroastrian influences on the major monotheistic religions, with a subspeciality in Kabbalah mysticism. Reynard is charming and debonair, but increasingly unfulfilled in his life, and has begun to court disaster with secret relationships with students and other risk-taking behaviour.
