Of course it does vary from shield to shield. Hoplons were almost more like extra corselets then shields whereas viking shields were so mobile that they were often ad-hoc weapons in their own right.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to shelve my curiosity about this issue for now and hope Low Tech answers all my questions. I can't wait either.
