Major design oversight...
If that's not addressed in the eight books of Dungeon Fantasy, maybe the explanation is the lack of a proper bestiary ("bane" in this context applies to specific creatures/monsters), instead that oversight you're guessing. (Yes, I know there are already some critters in DF 2 and templates for orcs, goblins, minotaurs, etc in DF 2, but still...)

I only just got this and I must say that so far it look fantastic. My impression at the moment is that this is the best random treasure system ever produced, beating old-school RPGs at their own game.

That's part of it. The other, and more important, part is that there's no oversight. The issue is addressed; it's just been genericized so that it's no longer specifically limited to weapon enchantments. See Class Restriction and Race Restriction in the Curses section. They're as functionally identical to Bane as one can get without published bestiaries.

Look closer. In fact, if you scan back on my posts a few weeks, you'll see that I posed a demonslaying sword which was created entirely by random rolls. Flaming damage and vital-seeking, only vs. demons.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the author!

I was about to post this . . . but Matt got here first. To expand a bit, Class Restriction and Race Restriction do what Bane does. In a DF world, there are so many possible foes that the mere half-price enchantments that Bane allows for a single race would seem horribly lame – especially if you had to pay extra energy, and hence dollars, for the Bane just to set it up! The flat quarter price sans setup cost that these restrictions allow is fairer, but since that's different from Bane, we don't call it Bane. Indeed, Bane might not even exist as a spell in DF, which is fine, since enchantment is behind the scenes in DF anyway. In DF, Bane is the name of a poison, not a spell; see p. 37.

My fault for not reading the entire document. Sorry.

On a minor note, the book is more useful than it gives itself credit for.

It will be of great help to the GM who wants to either

1. Design a hoard worth $X, without relying on random rolls.

2. Decide on the value for some treasure they made up.

Of course, the GM can determine such values by fiat, but deciding by fiat can easy lead to strange inconsistencies. If the PCs have a tiny diamond worth $5,000 from one dungeon and a bag of diamonds worth $4,000 from another dungeon, they will notice that this makes no sense.

Is something missing from the Curses Table? The bottom of page 52 has 6, 5: Willful Device, with no description, and then page 53 is embelishments. No description, no 6, 6 result.

Very Willful Device, which is in the index, appears to have been pushed off the page in layout . . . along with the rules for Willful Device.

Oops, and I just printed it out :D I'll hold off on binding things until I can stick an errata sheet in the middle.
