Heh, yeah. Sniping is as much about patience and timing as it is being a good shot. Waiting for the perfect shot is often a lot more important than getting it off as soon as possible. There are many cases where it would be better to not take the shot than to take an iffy one.

Some instances:

One is far behind enemy lines, with little or no support available. This could lead to a chance to have to avoid enemy forces.

One who misses could be spotted and could experience the thrills and chills of being on the receiving end of an artillery or air strike.

A miss could hit an inapporpriate target - such as a friendly or innocent person, like either your own country's ambassador or the target's three month old child. A fail in either case.

One of the lessons I got hammered into me is that unless you're absolutely sure of your shot, do NOT take it. While many gamers don't care about collateral damage, a realistic campaign would take that into account, with a result of the sniper being cashiered. Or cancelled.

Hans has already answered, but I'd just want to add that it still might be a marginally useful idea as a back-up plan. I mean, if the shot is difficult but not at all impossible, and there is a rock right behind (as in, very close) the target, go for a torso hit. If it misses, especially by 1 or 2 points, the bullet will still hit the rock right behind the target and there is a chance of wounding the target, if not with the round's fragments itself, with rock splinters. This still can stun, shock, distract the target, possibly slow him down etc., making a second shot easier.

It can also warn him if he was unaware of the shooter - but then again any miss would.

I don't know what you mean by "vaporized", but I think that round does not explode inside a human body. It simply gets through.

A lot of damage, instant killing him. In that case, Raufoss wasn't been used. And I acknowledge that Raufoss doesn't explode inside a human body, without body armor.

Very good point, but as I said wasn't me that chooses this course of action, I just doesn't played the tsar GM and vetoed the player's idea.

And to add, just to clarify, the target was covered, but the head. So, going to the body means an obstacle hit, remembering that the obstacle in question was a solid rock. So a breakthrough was not an option.

But anyway, really seems to me as a valid option in other context.

That is how to be a sniper.
