We wouldn't have FTL, and maybe barely started to explore space, so we have no way of trying to get to the source of the broadcast, and our own replies will take centuries to reach any of the 'others'. Of course then things get mixed up when one of the alien broadcasters start sending out plans for a hyperdrive...

As other threads have said, that would require radio waves to propagate much farther than they do in the real world. Still interesting though.
