I agree that the raw materials would be more useful to the colony, Especially if it is designed from the outset to breakdown into stuff useful to the colony.
STL interstellar civilisations need to adopt a very leisurely pace of change anyway. So it would be more like the Roman Republic sending off a bunch of galleys after the Punic Wars, and the Empire getting them back around the birth of Christ.
