Default Cheating rule

Well, there is a rule that seemes to be known to everyone that plays Munchkin around here, but recently a friend of mine read the entire rule list and realized that it isn't written there!

I'm talking of course of the infamous "You're allowed to cheat as long as nobody catches you" rule.

Now granted, that you could say this applies to every game, but we all thought that it was an acutal rule integrated into the game and taken into account while it was made. Because if you cheat in any other game youre considered a mean spirited cheater and a jerk. If you do it in Munchkin you're just considered a munchkin and your concience souldnt bug you as much.

So what say you guys, is it a real rule?

Actually, Erik and/or Andrew (the SJG reps in these forums) have stated that Munchkin was never intended to allow outright cheating. The rules do not say you can cheat. They do say you can be as cheap as possible, within the rules. However, I guess you might houserule that you can cheat, assuming everyone in your group goes along with it. Just don't expect any seasoned Munchkin player to join in.

Here's a link to where they make this distinction, if you want it. The argument is the second half of the first page and overflows onto the second.

You already have a link to my full size treatise in an earlier post, but I'll sum it up, officially, in one word: No.

It's funny. When we bought the game and read the rules, we never once got the impression you were supposed to cheat. We got the idea that "being Munchkinly" was more about screwing over the other guy to win, but not cheat. I've never understood people going that route. Oh well.

Wow... That is a big disappointment... We're all used to thinking it's a real rule and playing accordingly and it can be so much fun... For example you can often "owe" someone because you know they know you have more than 5 cards but they don't call you on it, etc.
And there's always that challenge of trying to see what cards you ahve iwthout everyone noticing you have about a bajillion of them.

Now considering I hate cheating(unless allowed) I'll actually have to play fair. Either that or make it a house rule.

Though I doubt it will be easy for my friends to adjust back from "accidently" dropping out important details when reading out cards, or having too many cards.

The point that's important to remember is that if you're not playing with your usual group of friends, you can't cheat and expect to have it considered acceptable. There's no problem with having a cheating house rule, but it's a house rule, not the norm.

Another point to remember: Munchkins will cheat (Cheat! card, anyone?). You, however, are a player, playing a munchkin, not an actual munchkin, and have to use the rules of the game to do just that. So, if the munchkin you are playing wants to cheat, you have to have a Cheat! card to effect that. Breaking the rules of the game involves the player cheating, and that's what is not acceptable from an official point of view.

I think the only munchkin item that even has something like this is the bag of +6 munchkin where it says 'if you leave out the limit, who are we to argue' or something along that verbage.

But I totally don't allow cheating. Ruins the spirit of the game.
