Several PDF's have been turned into softcovers, primarily due to popularity.

Probably because it generally is not seen at the FLGS.

I don't see any GURPS books at my FLGS. They will special order (I had them special order Thaumatology)...but they only carry d20 and White Wolf. That's it.

It's common knowledge that I despise fantasy. However, anything that gets people to buy and play GURPS is okay by me. It isn't my cup o' tea, but it doesn't have to be.

I've never really understood this. I can certainly see how fantasy would simply not appeal to some people, but I've always been flummoxed when the notion of it manages to elicit opinions as strong as this.

Cheers.

I'm old. ;-)

I'm not really old, but I do feel old sometimes.

To me, this is no different than when someone hates sports, or hates "chick flicks" or anything like that. I simply cannot stand about 90% of what is represented by the Fantasy genre (and pretty much 100% of Dungeon Fantasy). I would rather not play than play fantasy. I would rather do just about anything other than play fantasy.
I think I "out-grew" fantasy at age 12. I'm not dissing fantasy, I just realized that there are "better things" than fantasy. I would much rather be a super hero or a starfighter than a fighter or a mage. And I certainly did not want to be wandering around in dungeons killing monsters and taking their stuff. I have video games for that . . . video games that I don't play.

I also hate Sit-Coms and Reality TV.

It happens. I can't speak for Mark, but some people really can't stand the moral absolutism implied in many fantasy games. For my part, I'm actively repulsed by the smug sense of superiority implicit in conspiracy-centric games.

Funny, it's the moral absolutism that turns me off of supers, in part. And the over-the-top pathos that turns me off of gothic horror.

But back on topic ... I wonder what the actual spread of DF is. Beyond those who buy it, how many others they touch with it in their gaming groups, and whether or not that touch causes a good game or a lawsuit.

Could you talk more about this? Who has the sense of superiority? The players? The PCs? The GM? and superiority over what/whom? People who don't play conspiracy-centric games? NPCs? The Players? Morality? Reality? Are you talking about all conspiracy-centric games? Or Hitean conspiracy-centric games? Espionage? Horror? Weirdness? Mystical? Cyberpunkian?

I ask because I've never gotten a sense of smugness or superiority from the conspiracy-centric games I've been involved in. Heck, I've played in D&D fantasy games that were conspiracy-centric. So...I guess I'd like to understand your position more.

I do see that that's possible, but I don't see it as remotely necessary. Of my fantasy campaigns, only two out of ten had an absolute moral frame of reference, the Middle-Earth one and the In Nomine one, and that frame was treated pretty ironically in the latter. Now if you're talking about D&D fantasy with Good and Evil and Law and Chaos, then yes, but my reference for fantasy is fantasy novels, and the old stories that are their inspiration.

On the other hand, I can get "not my thing." I can't imagine ever wanting to play Vampire: The Masquerade or its successor species.
