Really the only place it gets wierd is when you deal with all the inventions, and then you've got the gadgeteering rules to work with. That's the iffy spot for the SW conversion as well, so I'm looking forward to the official take on it.
I think the main attraction of the game is the Victorian setting without having an existing human race be the wogs. The outlook of the Englishman of the time was entirely racist, as well as classist and nationalist, and while there is a certain romance about all those old attitudes, They make me, for one, rather uncomfortable around a table with friends, even though they all happen to be white. Therefore, having a lot of aliens conveniently handy makes it a little less offensive.
