It's all operated by a sequence of EM impulses. Run the sequence one way to move round from magazine to firing position, reverse the sequence to move round back into magazine. I assumed that there was a point where the accelerator proper started. That's what I call the 'chamber' mainly because it's a familar term.

How the round gets there varies from weapon to weapon. An electrical feeding system appears a likely default, but it's not, strictly speaking, part of the accelerator itself.

I quite agree that it's possible to construct a weapon that can move rounds both forward into the action and backwards into the magazine. It just strikes me as much more complex and prone to failure than an action which does only the former.
