I always enjoyed sending players out for snipe heads and bandersnatch hearts in AD&D. Usually I require the would be enchanter to make a concept roll like when they are designing an item in the invention rules. If it succeeds (,assuming the wizards knows all the prerequisite spells), I give them a list of ingredients. Each ingredient reduces the energy cost for enchantment. The minimum time for the spell itself is one week.
It's a great way to send players to stupidly dangerous locales. Plus you can make them transport tanks full of preserved dire gopher eyes all over creation for you amusement.
