Dungeon Fantasy: Arachnia

She is called Poison, Vengence, Wicked Trickstress, Black Widow and Spider Queen. She may not even exist but there are many legends of her. She is said to have been born of a beautiful yet cruel sidhe named Leanana. Leanana was in the forest one day when a spider-spirit caught her eye. She marveled at its web and to its delicate movements. She watched as a fly-spirit flew into the web and got tangled. The spider then caught the fly spirit, poisoned it and the drank its blood. She enjoyed watching the life get sucked out of the fly spirit. She decided to consort with the spider spirit, which some say was the Devil in disguise. Usually the sidhe consorted with spirits who were of positive aspects of nature to make the dwarves, elves, gnomes and other fantasy races. But Leanana enjoyed cruelty so she bore a child with the spider-spirit. Leanana was worried that her child would become a monster but all that was removed when she bore the most beautiful elf she had ever seen. She was named Arachnia. When Arachnia grew up, all elven eyes wished her to be their bride. The elf-king himself proposed and she accepted, becoming the elf-queen. The elf-queen was very unfaithful to he king, and she bore many children. The elf-king alway relented his anger when he saw her beauty though. The elf-king usually had many parties and festivals and all of the fey loved the elf-king. Arachnia grew jealous, she wanted to be the center of attention. During a toast to the king she demanded that the toast be to her. She had insulted the elf-king and all of the other faeries in attendence. The sidhe king demanded that she be sentenced to the underworld. Many of the selfish and nasty faeries came to her defence and were also sentenced to the underworld. When she got to the underworld, she saw her mother, Leanana there. Her mother had been caught draining the blood out of faeries just like the spider spirit did the fly. It was said that she was the first Leanan-sidhe. In the underworld, Arachnia despaired. She hated the ugly fomor and the trolls, orcs and goblins. But she did find the cave to be beautful in a way. The fomor and evil faeries constantly tried to exact revenge on the upper world be were always defeated. The surface dwellers were too powerful. Arachnia despaired into depression. Then a spider walked on her arm. She wasn't afraid of spider, in fact she had a real affinity for spider which seemed to follow her whever she went. This spider was different, some say it was her father. This spider told her secrets of how to make poison that would kill the immortals. She took a wine jug and the grabbed the spider and put it over the wine jug. Poison oozed from its fangs into the wine jug. Arachnia then figured out what to do. She went to the elf-king and apologized for her behavior. The elf-king forgave her and decided to give a party in celebration. All of the faery kings and queens were in attendence, the sidhe, dwarf, gnome and the others. Late in the evening after much drinking and toasting, Arachnia brought out her wine. She gave it to all of the faery kings and queens. The kings and queens all toasted "To Arachnia, the fairest of them all" As they drank they began to sicken and quickly die. The other faeries were stunned in disbelief. Arachnia called out to the evil faeries to avenge the surface faeries. There was much death as the underworld faeries slaughtered the upperworld faeries. A war raged and other faeries were called in. Titans and Dragons camed to the rescue. Sidhe wove terrible magics which in trying to stop the evil faeries and Arachnia, ripped open the faery realm. Many of the evil faeries ran underground to hide, others both good and evil were swept into other worlds. At last the sidhe caught Arachnia. She pleaded for her life, but they knew she was lying so the turned her into a spider. Arachnia scuttled to the underworld to hide. The sidhe and other faeries used their magics to destroy Arachnia but in doing so they managed to rip part of the faery realm way from the whole. It is said this part landed in Hell. Arachnia is rumored to weave webs to catch the souls of the damned now and sometimes she talks to her shadow elf brothers and sisters on plans and schemes to avenge the faery land.
