Default GURPS Monster Hunters Adventure: The Face of Fire

Out of dynamite
In Central America
I punched out Satan
— Raul Domínguez, El Libro de Cosas Oscuras
Call them cults, call them covens, call them secret brotherhoods . . . but when a group of people unite around a quest for supernatural power, it rarely ends well. If they have a measure of mundane power or influence, they can often get away with their occult shenanigans for long enough for things to end really badly. Worse, while it's cliché, sometimes the end is just the beginning – and in this case, it threatens to be the beginning of the end.

GURPS Monster Hunters Adventure: The Face of Fire, a high-powered horror adventure for GURPS Monster Hunters, explores these themes. To keep things mysterious, it isn't a classic RPG quest with a beginning, a middle, and an end, but a sandbox with several of each. In the hands of the right (wrong?) GM, it could even form the basis of an entire campaign.

And if you can't punch out the devil, bring extra dynamite.

Here is wisdom.

I ran portions of this adventure for three different groups during the playtest and we had a blast. Each group approached it differently with very little overlap. My main group dove in and we're still playing it now. I think we're a few sessions away from a grand finale, but the party keeps moving in unexpected directions, so I'm not sure what will happen. (Which is as it should be!) One of my favorite elements of the adventure is the rich array of NPCs. In each of the games I ran, the PCs were connected to different NPCs which made things especially fun.

PCs: "Lets go to Hong Kong!"
GM: (grumble grumble)

Thank you! That was a lot of people to keep track of from a writing perspective. I'm glad to hear it paid off.

And thank you for assisting in the playtest!

There's a lot of excellent detail and thought and plot in this book, including specific details for events and timelines which I really like, and it doubles as a great example of planning out a sandbox to use.

This can really be the start of a campaign, or be used and integrated into existing campaigns if you need more material.

You're getting not just an adventure, but many seeds for further adventures and the PCs can explore further and do more than some other adventure texts support.

Highly recommended!

Yes! And that was what the sandbox approach was trying to achieve, so I'm glad we've succeeded.

When we originally pitched the book, one of the plots and plans was the book. It was suggested we try to make it a sandbox, rather than just one adventure that GMs - who tend to want to make their own adventures, or highly-cannibalize and contort existing ones - would have to heavily modify to suit their current needs. I think that turned out a lot better.

Does this adventure use the investigation rules from the MH series?
