Freighter, patrol boat, and utility chopper are all examples of things that hurt when you lose them. And a freighter or patrol boat that's maintaining communications contact with drones is unlikely to be safe from being spotted and smacked with a shore-launched anti-ship missile.
It is for transporting a whole battery including the drones and their work stations in several helicopters and moving them to other places and I find it hard to believe that it is not possible to communicate twelve miles.

Expendable maritime vessels can control long range drones not to mention surface unmanned boats. They can extend the range beyond that of shore stations, and might be of advantage when orbital platforms are not available or are in hostile hands. And losing them certainly hurts less than losing the Russian navy.
