If anything I would have handwaved that in the opposite direction. The cold, rational, anti-magical metric system was instituted as a conspiracy by the Illuminati to keep those dratted wizards in check. Wizards (and alchemists) had to learn the imperial system as an obscure or even secret set of measurements necessary to make their spells and potions work.

So with the switch to imperial for everyday use, wizards will become even more powerful. They will be able to learn the various chemistry and engineering talents without paying double, and will ultimately take over the world. Just as the Secret Masters planned, in their counter-conspiracy against those dratted Illuminati.
