For Odin, who is, definitely, a chooser of the slain. In fact, the valkyries do lots of things in the original sources which have nothing to do with this role. They fight in battle, they serve meat at heavenly feasts, they are "southern goddesses" or reincarnated queens, and in some cases, are attributed the power of conferring or withholding victory, making them indistinguishable from a more typical divine figure.
