I might say, "Well, she's continuing to work as a writer, so the fact that she's getting paid now for books she wrote in the past is counterbalanced by the fact that she's not getting paid fully now for books she's writing in the present." Cancelling the two out against each other is a simplification, but unless her career suddenly takes off it's not hopelessly inaccurate.

Talking about writing in these terms is surprisingly stressful.
