I had a Gargoyle that learned net and trident. He could take up several nets in a bag and drop them on people, then dive upon them next turn.
The trident is a three pronged, short spear. I guess you could use a regular spear, but the 3 prongs makes it easier to have at least one prong hit. Also a spear is longer and a bit heavier that the trident and may not work as well in combination. If you want to capture the target and not kill him, use the trident to stab the net into the ground. As long as the target does not have a cutting weapon, they can't cut their way out and it probably locks them into it. I would consider that to be like a form of Pinning a Foe (ITLp 117). If you have a rope tied to the net, any missed throws could be reeled back in. You might also be able to keep ahold of the net as you try and envelope the target. If you miss, you still have the net. Would there be a penalty for keeping ahold of the net to ensnare the enemy? You can probably get a net that doesn't have any barbs on it and thus eliminate the 1d-3 damage. Then again, you might be able to have a special net made that can do 1d-1 damage at the same time.
