Thank you again, everyone, for the replies. I still have a few weeks before the game is implemented and I am running an off campus game for a few people, students, faculty and non-students to see their reactions and try to plot a path for the class keeping in mind that one of the best thing players are great at is going off script.

You could also make a few minor points about coinage vs modern coin and currency. Pointing out the difference between medieval specie vs modern circulating and collector coins. And about the barter economies of the lower classes.

I'd suggest an encounter with a coin clipper...
And make mention of merchants having a coin-scale. Weighing their coin.
Perhaps even a scale checking official going through the market.

And also, potential hooks involving hacked coin (using a knife to slice a silver or gold coin in order to make change)...

Little things that remind that it's not like the modern dollar.
