The video noted that he was only confident about throwing the sword up to three yards so throwing a non conventional melee weapon ought to have a DX penalty of -2 per hex instead of -1 per hex range. (He was impressed by the penetration though.)

Of course, if we are going to allow thrown swords, maybe we should allow thrown morningstars and battleaxes, too.

There is an entry in the Unusual Weapons part of the weapons table that lists Table, Chair.... as Thrown Weapons. With a note of GM discretion. If you can throw a table or chair, don't know why you can't throw a sword, or morning star or mace. If it is what you have in your hand as the badly injured enemy is about to escape, it is worth a try.
I think the Thrown Weapons talent should apply as it mentions getting the +2 DX bonus when throwing something. Seems written to apply to tables and chairs in addition to things like boomerangs and nets. A thrown sword would likely have a very short range increment. Unless someone had one made AS a throwing weapon. In that case, it would likely be less effective as a swung sword. Similar to using a boomerang as a club. |

We should probably move this to the house-rules forum at this point but here are my rules...
Throwing a weapon that isn't designed to be thrown will always be treated as an untalented (4-die) attack roll. Depending on the size/profile of the weapon (or object), there may also be additional DX penalties. For example, a short sword would be -2 DX, broadsword is -4 DX and a two-handed sword is -6 DX. If the 'to hit' roll is successful, damage is modified by -1 per die of damage normally dealt. A broken weapon (any size) may be thrown at -5 DX (due to the extra imbalance), but they will do only half damage.

And perhaps a figure with a ST well over what's required for a War Ax, Morningstar, Great Hammer, or Battleaxe should be able to throw those just like a ST 9 figure throws a Hatchet, but that's getting to be too many rules for my taste.
I would however enjoy seeing a Giant tossing a Cavalry Lance like a spear. With the +DX for multi-hex targets it might even be able to hit something like a dragon. Talk about cinematic.
