For me, when I have my players roll to notice something or to do something, or when I roll for them, I treat failures as it just taking them longer to do it.
Looking for the moon could take a second or several. |

I like this in general, because I'm GOING to pick up my dropped keys. It might take me one second (hah!), or I fumble for 30 seconds. Or I have to get up and get out of my car because how the heck did they fall so deeply into that crevice?

This is also how I've been treating tasks that take time lately. Totally a a houserule, but it makes sense.
