Perhaps instead of saying that you need to be in HTH combat against them the rule should say that they need to be in combat with you. Then multihex creatures that are trampling you would be immune, even if you declared yourself in HTH. OK, that's not a particularly good rule mechanic.

It would be nice if pins, magic ropes, whips, bolas, nets, etc. all worked the same way. For instance, the weapon might inflict tangle hit points, and if your tangle hit points (plus wounds, plus fatigue?) exceed your ST then you are tangled. Each turn you can try to get rid of some tangle hit points by taking an action, using a knife to cut yourself free, whatever.

I've sometimes thought knockdown hit points would be a better way to represent knockdowns as well.
