Does the first point in Mental Strength get you anything?

Also, as someone else pointed out, it's useful if you have a Talent that adds to Mental Strength rolls (since the Talent probably doesn't add to Will rolls directly).

what if we just made rolling against mental strength mandatory? that way you'd always roll at the default and it'd incentivize the skill more

There is no default, as such.

Mental Strengtb makes sense as a complentary skill for Mind Block, defensive uses of Dreaming, and probably some other skills.
