Default Extra Effort Help

Hi. I've been reading through the Exploits book and I'm struggling to really understand Extra Effort as it's been written and hoping someone can help explain the mechanics to me.

Does EE replace the skill roll completely? Extend what you're able to do (so make a normal jump check and then roll will to increase your distance)?

What does the part mean when it says if you're trained in skill you can roll WILL against that skill? If I have a jump of 10 and a Will of 14 how does that work?

Thanks

It's a bit confusing, isn't it? But this is how I think it works.

The first case is if the character doesn't have a particular skill like Jumping or Lifting. Let's say my cleric has DX 12, Will 14, and MV 5. Normally, with a running start, I could roll vs. DX to jump a maximum of 5 yards. Let's say I need to get across a wider chasm. First, I spent 1 FP and roll vs. Will. I roll 10, so that's a margin of 4. Multiply 4 * 5% = 20%. So now I can jump 6 yards. I think you would still need to roll vs. DX at that point, but I'm not sure about that.

Similarly, my cleric has ST 12 and no Lifting ST or Lifting skill. Typically, I can lift up to 232 pounds over my head with both hands in four seconds. If I use 1 FP and roll a 10 vs. Will, I can now lift another 20% or 278 pounds.

The second case is if you have the skill. In that case, you can opt to float your skill to Will (or HT for Lifting). So if my cleric has Lifting at DX+0 (12), he could roll vs. Will+0 (14) at a cost of 1 FP. Because my Will is higher than my DX, I'm effectively getting a skill bonus of the difference (+2).

Obviously, this is not particularly useful for characters with low Will.

Thanks. I'm not really sure why I struggled to understand Extra Effort but you examples make it make sense. I would assume that the first instance you need to roll vs a default skill value or it wouldn't make sense for the rule to also have a callout for if you were trained in the skill having a different base attribute.

As you said it's really something for high Will then but then again if you've got a high DX or HT you really don't need it. From the entry Extra Effort requires "speed or strength" so I'm guessing athletic skills only and there to help the non-combat people make those when it's important.
