I should say that my sci-fi worlds were heavily based on Jack Vance’s “Demon Prince” novels. These always seemed to fit well with TFT to me.

You're not alone in that (more to come). And yes, the Oikumene is a great setting for a sci-fi campaign, as is his Gaean Reach.

If you can find a copy of GURPS Traveller, you could simplify that down to the basic TFT system.

GURPS Traveller Classic (3e) is available as PDF files at W23. I think I have all of them except Interstellar Wars (4e). And they are very tasty!
