Hireling with the Boomdagger

If you sacrifice a Hireling that was carrying the Boomdagger, does the Boomdagger come back to you? It was lost due to death, but not the player's death, so there's some debate.

Edit: Related Scenario: what if the Boomdagger was under the effect of Cursed Thingy!?

If the Hireling was carrying it, he's the owner, not you, and the card stays in the discards. That's the easiest way to play this very, VERY annoying card.
